Grilled Pizza: A Smoky, Crispy Summer Delight

Grilled pizza is a game-changer for summer cooking. It delivers a crispy, slightly charred crust with a delicious smoky flavor that you can’t achieve in a regular oven. Plus, grilling pizza keeps your kitchen cool, making it perfect for warm-weather gatherings.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

2 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon sugar

1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) instant yeast

¾ cup warm water

1 tablespoon olive oil

For the Toppings (customizable!):

½ cup pizza sauce (tomato, pesto, or garlic butter)

1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese

½ cup cherry tomatoes, sliced

½ cup cooked sausage or pepperoni

¼ cup fresh basil leaves

2 tablespoons olive oil (for brushing)

Instructions:

Prepare the Dough:

In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.

Stir in flour, salt, and olive oil. Knead until the dough is smooth and elastic (about 5 minutes).

Cover and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Preheat the Grill:

Heat your grill to medium-high (about 450°F/230°C). Lightly oil the grates to prevent sticking.

Roll Out the Dough:

Divide the dough into 2-3 portions. Roll each one out into a thin circle or oval shape.

Brush one side with olive oil.

Grill the Dough:

Place the oiled side of the dough directly onto the hot grill. Close the lid and cook for 2-3 minutes until bubbles form and the bottom is golden brown.

Flip the dough and grill for another 1-2 minutes. Remove from the grill.

Add Toppings:

Spread pizza sauce over the grilled side. Sprinkle cheese, meats, and veggies on top.

Melt the Toppings:

Return the pizza to the grill. Close the lid and cook for 3-5 minutes, until the cheese melts and the crust is crispy.

Finish and Serve:

Remove the pizza, sprinkle with fresh basil, drizzle with olive oil, and enjoy hot!

Customization Ideas:

BBQ Chicken Pizza: Use BBQ sauce, shredded chicken, red onion, and cheddar cheese.

Mediterranean Style: Top with feta, olives, spinach, and sun-dried tomatoes.

Caprese Pizza: Add fresh mozzarella, tomatoes, and balsamic glaze.
